Creating a Sustainable Non-Profit: The Importance of Fundraising and Development

The main reason many young women are compelled to join the Junior League of Tallahassee is to give back to our community and serve in the many community projects of the League. We join because we want to improve the lives of children and families in our community through great projects like Kids’ Boutique and Operation Prom Dress and through our awesome partnerships with the Boys & Girls Club of the Big Bend and Girls on the Run of the Big Bend.

We volunteer our time and talents, but we all know that considerable funding is needed to make our projects successful. To fund our community projects, JLT relies on money raised from our fundraisers (like Whale of a Sale), generous community partners who serve as JLT sponsors and cash donations made to the JLT Annual Fund. This short blog entry will focus on the impact sponsors and annual fund donors are having on our league.

JLT has the privilege of teaming up with many local businesses that support our commitment to improving the Tallahassee community and give generous cash and in-kind donations to make our work in the community possible. Our sponsors provide much of the needed funds to make our projects a reality – everything from supplying snacks and activities to our friends at the Boys & Girls Club to buying new clothing and backpacks for children at Kids’ Boutique. We know that without their generosity, much of our work would not be possible and we strive to give them recognition in many ways – in front of our membership, in our print media and external communications and in the community through event signage. Our aim is for sponsors to be recognized by our members and the community for their generous donations to the league – and we encourage JLT members to frequent these local businesses that make our community work possible.

After several years of research and development, JLT kicked off our first sustainable annual giving effort with the creation of the JLT Annual Fund this fall. This new fundraising initiative relies on the power of our many members to increase our community impact for both today and the future. The generous contributions of our current active members, as well as our sustainers, will provide greater financial stability in our budget from year to year and will ensure that the JLT will serve children and families for many years to come. Mid-way through the first year of the Annual Fund, we are already greatly encouraged by the support our members who have made an investment in our League by donating to the Annual Fund. We are confident the Annual Fund will be a driving force in growing the impact of JLT in our community and ensuring that our organization will be around for many, many more years in the future.

Although many people see the JLT as an organization of nearly 500 young women in Tallahassee doing the good work in our community, we are so much more than that. Without the support and generosity of local businesses, friends and our sustaining and active members, we would simply not have such a large impact in our community. We appreciate all of the businesses and individuals in our community who believe in JLT and who are enabling our good work improving the lives of children and families in Tallahassee.
