Why The Junior League?
Recognition of the need for training probably has been one factor distinguishing Junior League volunteers from other service groups since its formation. In 1901, Mary Harriman, the debutante daughter of rail financier E. H. Harriman, persuaded 80 of her friends to join her in forming the Junior League for Settlement Movements to work to improve the squalid conditions in which immigrants were living on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. These privileged young ladies, all in their late teens, soon realized their sheltered backgrounds had not prepared them to volunteer in the slums, so they launched an educational program for members. Mary Harriman’s vision for improving communities by using trained volunteers caught on. The second Junior League was started in Boston in 1907. The rest, as they say, is history. What began as 80 young women traveling to Manhattan’s Lower East Side to volunteer at a settlement house has blossomed into a growing movement of trained volunteers improving their communities through advocacy, hands-on service, fundraising and sheer hard work.
