The impact the Junior League of Tallahassee makes to our community is possible because of the dedication of our members – those who graciously give their time and resources. We are fortunate to have a membership filled with diverse, smart, hard-working and visionary women who choose to give their time and talent to positively improve the Tallahassee community through their Junior League of Tallahassee volunteer work.
Following are examples of our active Junior League of Tallahassee members:
Name: Ivette Marques League Position: Co-Chair, Whale of a Sale College and Major: Florida State University, Mass Media Studies and French Career: Public Relations: Senior Account Executive/Media Buyer at Ron Sachs Communications Years in JLT: Three (3)
Why you joined JLT: As a young professional, I joined the Junior League because I wanted to get more involved with the Tallahassee community. I loved the idea of a women's organization dedicated to training other women on effective volunteering and making a real difference in our community. Reasons why you would encourage other women to join JLT: Being a part of the Junior League is being a part of something much bigger than yourself. Our organization continues to grow and evolve and I feel there are more women in our community who could provide their unique skills, talents and energy to making the Junior League even better. There is nothing more satisfying than helping those who are less fortunate than you, especially impacting the lives of other women in the community as well as the future of Tallahassee -- its children. Additionally, I have made lasting friendships with women who I may not have met otherwise. The best thing about the Junior League is that it challenges you to be a better person and introduces you to other motivated and energetic women who are all different -- married, single, professionals, stay at home moms, business owners, leaders -- but who come together to make the mission of the League a reality each and every year. Favorite things you’ve done with JLT: Since my provisional year in the League, I have been a huge fan of the Whale of a Sale, our largest fundraiser. Tallahassee's biggest garage sale gives the League the opportunity to provide the community with quality items at low prices, while raising money that goes directly back into the community to fund our community projects. After working on the Whale of a Sale last year, I am now co-chairing the 2010 Whale of a Sale with two of my good friends and working with our wonderful to make it a hugely successful event!
Name: R. Jai Gillum League Position: Chair, Provisional Committee College and Major: Florida A&M University -- BS in Biology & Master of Public Health(MPH) Career: Director of Appointments for Florida Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink Years in JLT: Five (5) Why you joined JLT: To have more volunteer opportunities with community service projects and programs. Reasons why you would encourage other women to join JLT: JLT is a unique organization -- you have the opportunity to serve our community through a variety of wonderful projects, you receive training that can be used in other civic organizations, and you also have the opportunity to network and socialize with a group of amazing women. Favorite things you’ve done with JLT: Volunteering at our annual back-to-school shopping event Kids Boutique and working with the newest members of JLT – our dynamic Provisional Class.
Name: Debbie Bergstrom Breeze League Position: Past President and Active Sustainer College and Major: FSU and Political Science/Communications Career: Early on in my career I was involved with the Legislature and now I have turned a part time passion for volunteering into a full time profession. Years in JLT: 10 Why you joined JLT: To meet other women in the community who shared an interest in volunteering. Reasons why you would encourage other women to join JLT: The rewards and accomplishments of volunteering are so much greater when you do it with others and it's more fun too. Favorite things you've done with JLT: Working with new members and learning about new programs that benefit our community at conferences and workshops.
Name: Flecia Braswell Current Position: Sustainer Member College and Major: Florida State University - Political Science and Sociology When you joined JLT: 1990 Why you joined JLT: I wanted to be part of the Junior League because it had a reputation for getting things done. I too wanted to get things done in our community and make a difference with my time. Why you would encourage other women to join JLT: The Junior League gives young women the opportunity to learn skills they might not learn early in their careers. Public speaking, project planning and chairing committees are all things the Junior League offers to those who are willing to do the work to rise to leadership positions. Favorite things you’ve done with JLT: As community vice president, I had the opportunity to work with both the State Public Affairs Committee and the Membership Development Committee. I enjoyed helping shape the League’s agenda both at the local and statewide levels. Membership Development was also critical because it helped to strengthen the League as we gained new members. |
